BMW US Reports Increase of 7.7% for January 2010 Sales

With sales up 7.7 percent in January to 15,410 vehicles, the BMW Group in the U.S. (BMW and MINI combined) had a good start into the year 2010.

Sales of BMW brand vehicles increased 7.6 percent in January for a total of 13,163 vehicles compared to 12,232 vehicles reported in the same month a year ago. MINI USA reported sales of 2,247 automobiles, an increase of 7.9 percent compared to 2,082 cars reported last January.

“Traffic in our showrooms was a bit sporadic this month but combined with a strong December we are delighted to see a positive January gain,” said Jim O’Donnell, President of BMW of North America, LLC. “The new 7 Series had a particularly encouraging performance, assuming segment leadership with over 1,300 units sold.”

One the used car side, sales of BMW’s Certified Pre-Owned vehicles were down 25.6 percent, to 7,443 CPO vehicles versus 10,007 vehicles in January 2009. Despite a industry-wide slow start coming out of the 2010 gate, BMW’s used car business expects to hold their own this year.

New BMW Art Car Coming

Internationally acclaimed artist Jeff Koons will create the 17th BMW Art Car in the 35th anniversary year of the program.

Koons and Jim O’Donnell, President of BMW North America jointly made the announcement today at an event held at Koons’ New York City studio. "I always thought it would be an honor to work on a BMW Art Car,” said Jeff Koons. “I look forward to participate in a tradition set forth by such great artists as Calder, Lichtenstein, Stella, and Warhol."

“The entire BMW Group is looking forward to this celebration of contemporary art by Jeff Koons, one of the greatest artists of our time,” said O’Donnell in making the announcement.

Koons will join an illustrious group of artists that include Andy Warhol, David Hockney, Jenny Holzer, Roy Lichtenstein, Frank Stella, Robert Rauschenberg, and Alexander Calder – each of whom has made a unique artistic statement about the appearance and meaning of cars.

The Koons BMW Art Car will be revealed later in the year, stay tuned to E90Fanatics - E90 - E91 - E92 - E93 - M3 for details and pictures!

Koons and BMW
The germination of the idea began in 2003, when Koons expressed his desire to create a BMW Art Car. His relationship with BMW started over two decades ago when he drove a BMW while residing in Munich, home to the BMW Group headquarters. Koons is known for his heartfelt appreciation of cars. Earlier this year he was even recognized by music icon Bono of U2 as the one of the ideal artists to design a car that would make the world fall in love with automobiles again.

“We are enormously pleased about Jeff Koons’ eagerly anticipated contribution to the BMW Art Car series, celebrating its 35th anniversary,” said Frank-Peter Arndt, member of the Board of Management for the BMW AG and responsible for BMW Group’s international cultural formats. “Art Cars are part of the DNA of BMW’s cultural engagement. As manifested in Koons’ latest sculptural work, what unites us is the belief that nothing is impossible. Our company and Jeff Koons are drawn to permanent innovation and cutting-edge technology.”

BMW Art Cars
Since 1975, artists from throughout the world have turned BMW automobiles into art signifying a particular period through the Art Car program. In 2007, the latest installment was revealed with Olafur Eliasson’s “Your... [Read More]

The New BMW 335is Coupe and Convertible

Confirming what may have been this year's worst-kept auto industry secret, BMW announces the introduction of the BMW 335is Coupe and Convertible, each destined to take a place in history among the line of desirable, often collectible, BMW "s" models. Based on the newly-enhanced BMW 3 Series Coupe and Convertible, the new BMW 335is features the award-winning, twin-turbocharged BMW inline-6 engine, specially tuned and equipped to produce 320 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque from its 3.0-liters. For the first time on a BMW 3 Series in the US, the 7-speed Double Clutch Transmission (DCT) with Launch Control will be available as an option, in place of the standard 6-speed manual transmission. Equipped with the DCT, the 335is Coupe is capable of 0-60mph acceleration in 5 seconds flat. The BMW 335is will debut at the New York International Auto Show and arrive at BMW Centers later in the spring. Pricing will begin at $50,525 including Destination for the 335is Coupe, and $59,075 including Destination for the Convertible.

Fundamentally unchanged are the BMW 3 Series' essential attributes of rear-wheel drive, near-perfect 50-50 weight distribution, remarkably precise steering, and skillfully engineered suspension….all of which conspire to produce the uniquely satisfying driving experience that is quintessentially BMW.

The "s" was first seen by North Americans on the original BMW 3 Series, which was imported from 1977-1983. The 1980 BMW 320is included the most desirable 3 Series equipment, including Recaro sport seats, sport steering wheel, halogen high-beams, sunroof, dual color-keyed wing mirrors, anti-sway bars, exterior aerodynamic enhancements, and cross-spoke light-alloy wheels. Later in the1980s, the BMW 3 Series and 5 Series were each available as "s" models, including the BMW 325es, 325is, and 535is. Again, sticking with a proven formula, BMW gave the "s" models enhanced aerodynamics, sport suspension, on-board computer (OBC) and Check Control, sport leather seats, and other features. Early last decade, the original BMW X5 Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) was available twice as an "s" model, first as the BMW X5 4.6is and then as the BMW X5 4.8is. The "s" model SAVs brought even further enhancement in the form of increased power from their modified V-8... [Read More]

The New 2011 BMW 3 Series Coupe and Convertible

BMW has announced substantial enhancements to the 2011 3 Series Coupe and Convertible, including outstanding style updates for 328i and 335i models and a new engine for 335i models. The 2011 3 Series Coupe and Convertible models will go on sale in Spring 2010, and pricing will be announced closer to the on-sale date.

Fundamentally unchanged are each car's essential attributes of rear-wheel drive (xDrive is available on the Coupe), near-perfect 50-50 weight distribution, remarkably precise steering, and skillfully engineered suspension........all of which conspire to produce the uniquely satisfying driving experience that is quintessentially BMW.

All-new is the engine for the 335i model. Internally designated the "N55," this turbocharged, all-aluminum engine features essentially the same "short block" and 3.0-liter displacement of its predecessor, but benefits from five additional years worth of development and refinement. The result is an engine that is more responsive, more fuel efficient, and cleaner-running than its outstanding predecessor, but preserves the previous engine's output and soul: 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque, and a 7,000 rpm redline. The 6-speed manual gearbox - beloved by North American enthusiast drivers - remains standard, and the well-known 6-speed Steptronic automatic is optional, now featuring "pull-style" shift paddles on the multifunction steering wheel.

Design. Reflecting the legendary distinction of BMW Coupes and Convertibles
The profile of the BMW 3 Series Coupe and Convertible is instantly recognizable at first glance. Beyond the basic shape of the car and its classic lines, the new design of the headlights, the enhanced depth and detail of the taillights, the interior, and even the exterior mirrors were specifically created for the Coupe and Convertible. These unique design elements reflect the sporty character of the car. The driver who chooses a two-door vehicle desires a car with dynamic looks as well as driving performance. With this in mind, BMW engineers and designers set out to create a unique, unmistakable blend of design features and most importantly, driving pleasure.

It all begins with proportions. The new, long hood powerfully symbolizes BMW's loyalty to... [Read More]

BMW November 2009 Sales Numbers - Sales still down from 2008

BMW GROUP REPORTS NOVEMBER 2009 SALES

BMW brand sales up 3.2% in November; X5 Advanced Diesel accounted for 25% of all X5 sales

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – The BMW Group in the U.S. (BMW and MINI combined) reported November sales of 18,272 vehicles, a decrease of 7.5 percent from the 19,762 vehicles sold in the same month of 2008. The BMW Group also reported a year-to-date sales volume of 218,110 vehicles, down 22.5 percent compared to 281,564 vehicles sold in the first 11 months of last year.

BMW Brand Sales
Sales of BMW brand vehicles increased 3.2 percent in November for a total of 15,708 vehicles compared to 15,217 vehicles reported in the same month a year ago. Year-to-date, BMW brand sales were down 23.7 percent to 176,374 vehicles compared to 231,053 vehicles sold in the same period of 2008.

“November gave us some reason for optimism as it’s the second time in the last three months we showed a gain compared to the same month last year,” said Jim O’Donnell, President of BMW of North America, LLC. “Overall, we believe that the premium segment is on its way back even though in the early part of 2010, it will be a bit bumpy and uneven. Our cause will be aided with the introduction of more new BMW models next year and just as we saw last month, continued solid performances from our X5 and X5 Advanced Diesel vehicles.”

The BMW X5 Advanced Diesel is the most forward ordered vehicle of BMW’s model range and accounted for one quarter of all X5 sales in November.

BMW Certified Pre-Owned (CPO)
In November, sales of BMW’s Certified Pre-Owned vehicles increased 7.9 percent to 8,307 CPO vehicles versus 7,700 vehicles reported a year ago. Year-to-date, CPO sales were up 11.3 percent to 103,289 over the 92,781 reported in the same period of 2008.

MINI Brand Sales
MINI USA reported sales of 2,564 automobiles, a decrease of 43.6 percent compared to 4,545 cars reported in the same month a year ago. Year-to-date, MINI USA also reported sales of 41,736 automobiles, a decrease of 17.4 percent, compared to the 50,511 cars reported in the first 11 months of 2008.

“November was a peculiar month as we saw fewer consumers shopping for small, fuel efficient vehicles,” said Jim McDowell, Vice President MINI USA. “However, we know we have the right kind of vehicles for the... [Read More]
